Ashton Kutcher petitions for baby change facilities
Ashton Kutcher has set up a petition campaigning for baby change facilities in men’s rest rooms.
The 37-year-old actor – who has five-month-old daughter Wyatt with wife Mila Kunis – recently expressed his frustration at being unable to change his little girl’s diaper in public and has now teamed with Change.org to ask US retailers Target and Costco to “provide universally accessible changing tables in their stores.”
Sharing the petition – which has so far attracted over 70,000 signatures – on his Facebook page, he wrote: ” “It seems this idea of diaper changing stations has struck a chord. It’s a pet peeve of mine when people just complain about s**t and don’t do anything to improve their condition. So lets do something. In for equality? Pass it on – #LeanInTogether (sic)”
The ‘Two and a Half Men’ star has singled out the two retailers as “leaders in their industry” who could herald a change if they take the steps.
He wrote on the petition’s page: “Target and Costco have proven themselves time and time again to be companies that honour diversity, support families, and provide great services to kids of all ages. That is why I am calling on them to be the change. As leaders in their industry, they can initiate a company-wide policy to provide universally accessible changing tables in their stores.
“If Target and Costco take this step, I know that other companies will follow suit and recognise that we should be supporting all parents equally. ”
However, it seems Ashton doesn’t need to ask Target to change their policies as they have reassured him they offer diaper-changing facilities that are accessible to both genders.
In a response to the petition, they wrote: “For the convenience of all of our guests, we have made changing tables a standard feature in both our men’s and women’s restrooms for more than 25 years. In addition, as we build new stores, we place changing tables in our women’s, men’s and family restrooms.
“In the event a changing table is unavailable, we encourage our guests to notify a team member and we will be happy to offer an alternative private location to meet their needs.”
