Mastercard partners with AF Payments to launch Contactless Bus Payments in Bonifacio Global City
Commuters in Bonifacio Global City (BGC) can now enjoy the convenience of contactless payments for bus rides with their Mastercard prepaid, debit, or credit cards. The initiative, launched as part of a pilot program, allows cardholders to simply tap their Mastercard cards on BGC bus validators, removing the need for separate bus tickets and contributing to a seamless travel experience.
This pilot program, the first phase of a strategic partnership between Mastercard and AF Payments Inc. (AFPI), introduces a new level of convenience for commuters while expanding on the current payment options of beep™ cards and beep™ QR codes. Announced earlier this year, the program will eventually extend to other transport systems, including EDSA buses and Metro Rail Transit Line 3, enhancing the ease of digital payments across Metro Manila’s public transport network.
Support for the Philippine Government’s Digital Payments Vision
Mastercard’s initiative aligns with the Philippine government’s push to accelerate the adoption of digital payments across various sectors, particularly in transportation. The contactless payment option offers commuters a cashless and efficient alternative, reinforcing Mastercard’s commitment to advancing smart and inclusive mobility solutions in the Philippines.
With approximately 14 million residents in Metro Manila, many of whom rely on public transportation, this initiative aims to streamline the commuting process, reduce transaction times, and improve overall travel experiences. By eliminating the need for cash and multiple transit tickets, this step brings convenience and security to everyday commuters.
Enhanced Security for Commuters
Commuters using their Mastercard cards to pay for bus rides can also rest assured knowing that Mastercard’s robust cybersecurity measures are in place to protect against card skimming and payment fraud. With ongoing investments in cybersecurity, including a $7 billion commitment over the past five years, Mastercard uses advanced identity verification, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to bolster payment security across all platforms.
A Vision for Smart Transit Solutions
According to JJ Moreno, President and CEO of AF Payments Inc., the Bonifacio Global City launch is an ideal starting point for the program, given the area’s status as a hub for global companies and innovative startups. This initiative not only provides better transit options for local commuters but also aligns with global standards for public transport efficiency and accessibility.
Simon Calasanz, Country Manager of Mastercard Philippines, also emphasized the program’s potential to improve the commuter experience by reducing queues and providing greater convenience for local residents. The program is a key part of Mastercard’s efforts to introduce innovative transit solutions in Metro Manila and further the adoption of digital payments.
A Global Leader in Open Loop Transit Payments
Mastercard has pioneered open-loop transit systems in major cities worldwide, including London, Sydney, and Singapore, offering proven expertise in enhancing commuter experiences and public transport infrastructure. With this rollout, Mastercard becomes the first international payment network to enable ‘Tap & Go’ for public transport in Metro Manila, making it easier than ever for commuters to move around the city.
