‘Mr. Robot’ Season 2 to Tackle Encryption and Privacy
“Mr. Robot” is set to return for a second season in the summer on USA Network and the producers revealed in an SWSX panel that the running storyline will involve data encryption and privacy, a very timely subject. It’s as if the story reflects recent scandal involving the FBI and Apple, but the show creator, Sam Esmail, said that they had been working on the plot since before real life events happened.
“What’s weird is that we were really going into [Season 2] talking about encryption and privacy,” said Esmail in the panel via Deadline. “And then this whole thing with Apple and [CEO] Tim Cook happened.”
“I’m not trying to say I’m a fortune-teller,” he further told the audience in the live streamed event, per Mashable. “I think privacy is going to be a huge issue in the next 10 years or so … It’s going to be an interesting public discourse.”
“Mr. Robot,” which debuted last year to critical praises, is about a team of hackers who have come together for a common cause. The events of the first season revealed the real relationship between Elliot and the guy who recruits him to the hacker group, “Mr. Robot.” But it also exposed internet safety as the running storyline.
The second season of “Mr. Robot” will still its main stars Rami Malek and Christian Slater, who were also present in the panel. The actors admitted they are hardly tech-savvy like their characters, but Slater joked that he has been more keen about password protection since working in the series.
