GAC AION UT Proves Cheap EVs Can Still Crush Safety Tests
A budget electric hatchback just aced one of the world’s toughest safety tests. The GAC AION UT earned a five-star rating from Euro NCAP 2026.
It’s one of the first mass-produced Chinese models to pass. That alone makes the result stand out.
The AION UT scored well across four categories. Safe Driving hit 66%, Crash Avoidance 74%, Crash Protection 91%, and Post-Crash Safety 88%.
Euro NCAP’s newest criteria are stricter than ever. They weigh active safety and driver-assist tech heavily.
Built Tough: The Engineering Behind the Score
The AION UT’s strength comes from its “Dragon-Bone Embraced Body Structure.” High-strength steel makes up 71% of the vehicle.
A one-piece hot-stamped dual-ring design reinforces the frame. So does an extra-wide 180mm crash box.
The roof can withstand up to 8 tons of load. That’s a serious structural benchmark for a small hatchback.
Inside, a 7-airbag system backs up the frame. It includes a 2.1-meter V-side air curtain.
A front far-side airbag reduces occupant-to-occupant impact in side collisions. Active safety tech rounds out the package.
Autonomous emergency braking exceeds legal requirements. The AION UT also adds cyclist dooring prevention and child presence detection.
What It Means for Filipino Buyers
“Earning the Euro NCAP Five-Star Safety Certification represents the ultimate endorsement from an authoritative international body for the AION UT’s uncompromised safety engineering,” said Calvin Cheng, General Manager of GAC Philippines.
He framed the milestone as more than a marketing win. “This milestone is a testament to our deep passion and commitment to empower and modernize mobility for Filipinos,” Cheng added.
Reservations for the AION UT are now open nationwide. Introductory pricing runs at PHP 998,000 through September 30, 2026.
Buyers can pick from six exterior finishes. Options include Rococo White, Emerald Green, and Twilight Lavender, all paired with black interiors.
EVs are often seen as a luxury upgrade in this market. The AION UT’s result argues otherwise.
Safety, it turns out, doesn’t require a premium price tag. That’s the real headline here.
