HealthJustice and NYC forge partnership to find out youth opinion on rising cigarette prices

The National Youth Commission (NYC), the “policy-making coordinating body of all youth-related institutions, programs, projects and activities of the government”, and HealthJustice Philippines, a think tank and advocacy group with legal expertise in tobacco control and health promotion, signed a Memorandum of Agreement sealing their commitment to conduct a national survey on the Filipino youth’s opinion on the increasing prices of tobacco products.

Public officials sign manifesto against tobacco industry interference

In a workshop organized by HealthJustice Philippines in partnership with the Civil Service Commission, tobacco control advocates working in local government units, national government agencies and public administrative bodies signed last April 28 a manifesto cementing their commitment to protect the bureaucracy against tobacco industry interference.

Following the disclosure by a “certain government official” that the losses incurred as a result of the issuance several mine closure and suspension orders could amount up to P77 billion, HealthJustice Philippines, a public health think tank and advocacy group, pointed out that such losses can be compensated by revenues from the tobacco tax.

There’s more to tobacco industry’s dirty tactics than tax evasion — health group

After the recent pronouncement of President Duterte that he ordered the arrest of the head of a local tobacco manufacturing agency allegedly for tax evasion, HealthJustice Philippines, a public health think tank with expertise in tobacco control and health promotion, clarified that “there is more to the dirty tactics of the tobacco industry than tax evasion.”

Health institutions, groups back Senate bill creating an independent health promotion body

During the hearing on Senate Bill 378 on the institutionalization of health promotion chaired by Senator Risa Hontiveros last February 15, public health institutions, groups and think tanks backed the creation of an independent health promotion body focusing on the preventive aspect of health care.

Significant tobacco tax increase and Duterte’s Tobacco Free Promise

HB 4144 was approved without amendment during the second reading on December 5. It sought a P7 increase of excise taxes to P32 and P36 from the current P25 & P29 with marginal increases of 5% per year instead of marginal increases of 4% per year based on RA 10351,the current Sin Tax Law which is scheduled to bring taxes to a single rate of P30 in 2017. The bill was sponsored by Rep. Eugene de Vera of ABS Partylist and supported by all those in the super majority.

COP 7 delegates call for strengthening safeguards against tactics of tobacco industry

The country’s delegates to the seventh session of Conference of the Parties (COP) to the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control pushed for stronger implementation of Article 5.3 of the agreement, which refers to protecting public health and tobacco control laws and policies against the commercial and other vested interests of the tobacco industry. The COP took place in New Delhi, India from November 7 to 12, 2016.

Health groups warn: Upcoming Jakarta tax forum backed by the tobacco industry

Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance (SEATCA), HealthJustice Philippines (HJ) and New Vois Association Philippines (NVAP) alerted the public today of the ties that bind the tobacco industry and the International Tax and Investment Centre (ITIC), which is behind the 13th Annual Asia-Pacific Tax Forum on May 23, 2016 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
