HealthJustice Philippines, a think tank and advocacy group with legal expertise in tobacco control and health promotion, congratulated Health Secretary Paulyn Ubial, a known tobacco control advocate, for receiving one of World Health Organization’s (WHO) World No Tobacco Day 2017 awards.
The Technical Working Group of the Committee of Health of the House of Representatives agreed last Tuesday, February 22, that there should be a Health Promotion Commission independent from the Department of Health. The recommendation was arrived at during the meeting to discuss House bill nos. 918 and 3657, the bills on health promotion authored by Hon. Harry Roque and Hon. Angelina Tan, respectively. The legislators sought inputs from resource persons in refining the said bills with a view to consolidating the two into one draft bill.
In the first committee hearing on the Senate Bill No. 378 creating a Health Promotion Institute last February 15, Health Secretary Paulyn Ubial, maintaining that health should be the concern not just of one department but of the whole government and society, said that she fully supports the creation of an independent health promotion entity focusing on the preventive aspect of health.
