High avalanche risk in Alps amid heavy snow; 1 dead

Authorities warned Sunday of a high risk of avalanches on the northern side of the Alps, after heavy snowfall in recent days created dangerous conditions in parts of southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

German police free hostage, injure suspect in train station

German police stormed a pharmacy in Cologne’s main train station Monday, freeing a woman who had been held hostage by a man for two hours, officials said. The suspect sustained life-threatening injuries.

Danish police arrest Syrian over planned ‘terrorist’ attack
