The Philippine government will demand a refund of 3.5 billion pesos ($69.5 million) from vaccine maker Sanofi Pasteur and look at possible legal action after a study showed the vaccine used in a dengue immunization program could expose some people to severe illness, the health chief said Friday.

A study by the Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has reported that most of the more than 10,000 residents of both Sta. Lourdes and Tagburos, Puerto Princesa suffer from mercury poisoning. The report states that residents have been exposed to this toxic chemical primarily through three modes: the 3-hectare pit lake (formerly an open pit mercury mining area), the city’s sanitary
landfill (built over a mined out area) and the Tagburos River which leads to Honda Bay.

Reps push for creation of independent Health Promotion Commission

The Technical Working Group of the Committee of Health of the House of Representatives agreed last Tuesday, February 22, that there should be a Health Promotion Commission independent from the Department of Health. The recommendation was arrived at during the meeting to discuss House bill nos. 918 and 3657, the bills on health promotion authored by Hon. Harry Roque and Hon. Angelina Tan, respectively. The legislators sought inputs from resource persons in refining the said bills with a view to consolidating the two into one draft bill.
