New Girl and The Americans, Renewed

Two new renewal announcements for television have been confirmed today.

First, the FOX comedy series “New Girl” has been given a fifth season, while the FX spy drama “The Americans” is coming back for a fourth season.

“New Girl’s” renewal comes as the show has been reportedly in trouble for low ratings compared to other network shows. Yet, as it is averaging a 2.3 rating among adults 18-49 and 4.4 million viewers for its current season, it is still considered one of FOX’s most popular comedies, following “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.”

On its return for a fifth season, the show will have Taran Killam and John Cho in the guest cast. According to TV Line, filming has already started as the production is making accommodations for its star’s pregnancy. Zooey Deschanel’s character Jess is not going to be pregnant in the series.

The show’s fifth season will set a milestone as well as it will be delivering its 100th episode within its run. Also in the cast are Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield and Lamorne Morris. Damon Wayans, Jr, who became a show regular for season four, has last year announced he is leaving the series.

Meanwhile, on cable, “The Americans” will be returning and running its fourth season early next year. The show, which has remained steady with its ratings since last season (at 4.2 million viewers), has had a remarkable third season  as the running plot this year has been widely praised by critics.

“The Americans” stars Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell as KGB spies pretending to be a typical family.

“The series has cemented it status with critics as television’s best current drama and arguably the best show on TV, and we couldn’t agree more,” said Nick Grad, FX’s president via The Hollywood Reporter.
