Netflix ‘To The Bone’ Director Addresses Controversy on Eating Disorder Film
The Netflix film “To the Bone” has not even premiered on the streaming site but the original movie is already earning a lot of ire from viewers on social media. Following the release of the first teaser, which shows Lily Collins’ character struggling with anorexia, several netizens spoke out and criticized the show’s theme.
“So I’ve just found out about this new Netflix film #ToTheBone. It looks ridiculously triggering & seems to be glamorizing eating disorders,” one commenter on Twitter said. “Netflix really should have a trigger warning on their trailer for #tothebone for individuals suffering from eating disorders,” another user suggested.
Viewers could not but compare another Netflix production “13 Reasons Why” for the controversial theme. This show was criticized for glamorizing teen suicide and several specialists spoke about it dangers of creating copycats.
But “To the Bone” writer and director Marti Noxon, however, addressed these criticisms. In a Twitter post, Noxon said she understood the struggle of someone with eating disorders as she suffered through this in her 20s.

Collins also revealed she suffers from anorexia, which is why she took interest in the project with Noxon. The Netflix movie also stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie Preston and Lili Taylor. The movie will premiere on Netflix on July 14. Check out the teaser in the video below.
