ASEAN urged to earnestly tackle ‘peace and security'; support peace accords in PH, Myanmar

As the Philippines hosts the celebration of the 50th founding anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which will be commemorated on August 8 this year, the Initiatives for International Dialogue (IID) along with its allied networks, the Asia-Pacific Solidarity Coalition (APSOC) and the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict-Southeast Asia (GPPAC-SEA), together with the broad civil society movements in the region, urgently call on the regional bloc to put front and center the issues of regional peace and human security that continue to challenge the stability of the whole regional community and beset the lives of the most vulnerable peoples in the region.

BPI-Philam helps Filipinos prepare this Disaster Awareness Month

Compared to its other Southeast Asian neighbors, our country experiences a wider range of disasters. From floods to landslides, and typhoons to earthquakes – the most recent of which just happened in Leyte with a magnitude of 6.5 – the Philippines continues to endure and survive. Though the government does its best in preparing for and anticipating these times of emergency through awareness efforts and disaster response drills, self-mitigation is still an area that we can further improve on.

Peace group lauds new BBL but rejects plan to extend Martial Law

The All-Out Peace (AOP) movement, a broad network of peace advocates and civil society groups, welcomes the submission by the 21-member Bangsamoro Transition Commission (BTC) of the new draft of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) to President Rodrigo Duterte on July 17 and lauds the commitment by the President to certify the proposed measure as urgent and “husband” the same before both houses of Congress.
