Nicole Kidman gave an update on the potential of a “Big Little Lies” Season 2 renewal on HBO. She said she and co-producer and fellow cast member Reese Witherspoon are working on it, but she also expressed that it’s not yet a done deal.

Kidman, who plays Celeste Wright on the series, talked to Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet during the CMT Music Awards Wednesday. She alluded she and Witherspoon (Madeline Mackenzie) have been brainstorming with book author Liane Moriarty and TV producer/writer David E. Kelley for further storylines.

But in a previous interview with her “Moulin Rouge” co-star Ewan McGregor, Kidman was singing a different tune about “Big Little Lies” season 2. She said there are no prospects for the show’s renewal at this point. “It was a book so it was pretty finite,” Kidman said. Watch the whole interview in the video below.

Kidman also said in May that she has conditions for doing season 2 and will only get on board “if the storyline could be powerful and compelling,” as per Variety. She felt she had a responsibility towards the audience since her role as a wife in an abusive relationship resonated with women’s real-life experiences.

HBO’s “Big Little Lies” ended its seven-episode first season in April, and as Kidman said, it had a solid conclusion that closely followed the book version’s ending. This led fans of the show to assume that the story won’t have anywhere else to go because it had a satisfactory ending. Thus, they believe HBO will not renew the series.

“Big Little Lies” director Jean-Marc Vallee also said in his interview with Vulture that the miniseries was a one-season deal. Hence, a second season was out of the question. But given the critical praises for the show, observers said HBO would be wrong not to bring the hit series back.
