NBA: Daryl Morey hopeful Sixers win championship with Embiid, Simmons

Philadelphia 76ers’ newly-hired President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey believes the franchise can win a championship with its current stars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.

Speaking per an ESPN report, Morey expressed excitement regarding the Sixers’ title hopes as they are surrounded by two young superstars.

“My goal is to win a championship, so whatever gets us there is what we’ll do … But I would say to have two star-plus players in 24 and 26 years old, that is why I couldn’t get Doc Rivers to come interview in Houston.

“He saw this roster and he said, ‘It’s amazing,’ and ‘Sorry I couldn’t fly to Houston to meet with you, Daryl.’ And then, obviously, I end up here a couple weeks later. … It was pretty cool.”

Morey left the Houston Rockets where he also led basketball operations. Recently, the Sixers hired Doc Rivers as their new head coach.

Rivers left the Los Angeles Clippers after a disappointing 2nd round exit, losing to the Denver Nuggets in spite of a 3-1 series lead.

Philly has made the playoffs 3 seasons in a row with their current core. However, with Simmons’ injury, the team took a 1st round exit in the 2020 bubble.

The team has a strong young core with all-stars Simmons and Embiid, as well as Josh Richardson, Tobias Harris, and Al Horford.

Morey mentioned that he has been communicating with Rivers for the future plans of the team as they try to elevate the squad to championship contention.
