‘Rodham’ Alternative History Series Planned at Hulu Based on Hillary Clinton

What would Hillary Rodham Clinton’s life be if she did not marry Bill Clinton? This is the premise of “Rodham,” the new alternative history series in the works for Hulu.

The show is based on a book from Curtis Sittenfeld. Hulu has tapped “The Affair” creator Sarah Treem to write the series with “The Handmaid Tale” executive producer Warren Littlefield on board.

“Rodham imagines an alternative history where Hillary Rodham never marries Bill Clinton and asks what would have happened to her life and our country, if she had made a different choice,” the press release stated. “A modern parable about choices, feminism and why this country has such a complicated relationship to women in power… Rodham tells the story of an ambitious young woman, developing her extraordinary mind in the latter part of the 20th century, moving from idealism to cynicism and all the way back again.”

This is the second series focused on Hillary Clinton on Hulu, per Variety. The streaming platform also aired a documentary about the former Secretary of State in March, which covered her presidential campaign in 2016.

The book “Rodham” hit store shelves in May and climbed the New York Times bestselling list.

“Freed from the Clinton baggage, Hillary Rodham’s entrée into politics is scandal-free,” the Vox’s book review stated. “In the alternate history of Rodham, she is never the first lady, and Bill Clinton is never president (his 1992 run is unsuccessful), so she never gives her infamous “superpredator” speech. She does not have to stand by her husband in the face of accusations of infidelity, sexual harassment, or sexual assault. The Iraq War never happens, so Hillary never votes in its favor.”

Casting for the show has not yet been underway. Production announcement has also not been detailed, pending an actual greenlight from the streaming platform.
