The Gilas Pilipinas Men 3×3 national team for the 2019 Southeast Asian Games started strong in the regional meet, sweeping the opposition in Day 1 of the tournament.
The squad composed of Chris Newsome, CJ Perez, Mo Tautuaa, and Jason Perkins beat Indonesia (21-17), Vietnam (21-15), Thailand (21-10), and Myanmar (21-10) in the opening day of the tournament being inaugurated in this edition of the games.

With a 4-0 record, the Philippines have a spot in the semi-finals, and are favorites to win the gold medal.

But in spite of the expectations, Newsome has indicated the team has no reason to relax.

“With the 4-0 start, that definitely improves our chances but we’re by no means finished with our work,” said Newsome per Inquirer.net.

“We’re not finished until the game is done. I think right now all we can do is go home and rest. Now is not the time to celebrate but now is the time to focus even more on what we have to do to reach that gold. So as long as we get our rest tonight and come back and everyones’ mentally ready to go then I feel like we have a great chance.”

The men’s squad wasn’t the only group which shone on opening day as the Gilas Women 3×3 team, represented by Afril Bernardino, Clare Castro, Jack Animam, and Janine Pontejos, claimed 3 wins as well.
