THE Larry Dumadag 2 chess team stole the limelight by winning the Hon. BM Alfredo B. de Veyra III Cup Tatluhan Mindanao Rapid Chess Championship last Sunday, July 22, 2018 at the Robinsons Place in Tagum City, Davao del Norte.

Having Nazario Ubanan, National Master (NM) Allan Cantonjos and Dennis Bermas on its roster playing Boards 1, 2 and 3, respectively, the team backed up by Laurence Wilfred “Larry” Dumadag of Unesco tallied 13.0 match points to pocket P60,000 and a trophy as awarded by tournament director Hon. BM Alfredo B. de Veyra in the one day rapid event sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines with Fide National Arbiter (FNA) Joseph Gener “Jojo” Palero served as chieft arbiter and assisted by National Arbiter (NA) Cecilio “Ely” Acas and National Arbiter (NA) Alfred Moulic.

They edged team Stalag 69 having the cast of Ronald Canino, Jeriel Manlimbana and Adrian Othniel Yulo which finished second with 12 match points. Team Stalag 69 brought home a runner-up trophy and P30,000.

Mangkaron Attack bannered by Recarte Tiauson, Don Tyrone delos Santos and Eric Abanco finished third with 11 match points. They received P20,000 plus third-place trophy.

At fourth place is MVP Red Stallions which is composed of NM Levi Mercado, Cleto Vasquez and Sonny Pasco tallied similar 11 match points but lower tie break points. They went home P10,000 and a trophy.

Tied for fifth to 11th placers after tallying identical 10 match points are RM Graphix (Christopher Randolph Dalauta, Jay Bulicatin and Darwin Bermudez) , Team Orbe (Narguindel Reyes, Ricardo Batcho and Gomobar Balabagan), Rey-Gen Force (NM Cedric Magno, Gerald Cavan and Rodel Alsado) , Redkings (FM Nelson “Elo” Mariano III, Malik Faizhal Gumama and Nelman Lagutin), Aton Brothers (Irwin, Arnel Nino and Warren Aton), Andoy’s Kardinals (Jaime Joshua Frias, Silverio Abasolo and Eutemio Coquilla) and Prince Bikers Chess Team (Junmark Baldesimo, Fame Fazon and Ian Dwight Llanto).

In the seventh and final round, National Master (NM) Allan Cantonjos and DEnnis Bernas provided the twin kill for Larry Dumadag 2 chess team by beating Malik Faizhal Gumama and Nelman Lagutin in Board 2 and 3, respectively.

Fide Master (FM) Nelson “Elo”Mariano III prevent a possible shut-out loss for Redkings as he beat Nazario Ubanan in Board 1.

According to Hon. BM Alfredo B. de Veyra III the said event aims to provide an avenue for aspiring athletes to improve and develop their skills and talents.
