‘Jumanji’ Sequel Release Date, Trailer, Plot News: Robin Williams Has Key Role in ‘Welcome to the Jungle’

Robin Williams’ “Jumanji” character Alan Parrish will be in the sequel “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.” One of the movie follow-up’s stars, Jack Black, confirmed the late comedian’s presence in a recent interview.

Black, who will play Professor Shelly Oberon, told The Hollywood Reporter that “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” has not forgotten to honor Williams. His character supposedly leaves behind clues around the film’s new setting.

“He built up a full-blown jungle house, similar to a Swiss Family Robinson situation,” Black said. “It’s like he’s there helping us without actually being there.”

Viewers may recall that Williams’ Parrish disappeared for years from the real world after playing “Jumanji” with friends as a kid. He was actually trapped in a jungle within the game and resurfaced after another group of children, played by Kirsten Dunst and Bradley Pierce, played the board game several years later. They drew the right numbers on the dice to allow Parrish to come back. His return to the real world also opened the portal for jungle creatures to come to his city.

It’s this very same jungle that Black and the rest of the sequel’s stars will be exploring. “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” also stars Dwayne Johnson (Dr. Smolder Bravestone), Kevin Hart (Moose Finbar) and Karen Gillan (Ruby Roundhouse).

“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” centers on four high school kids who discover a mysterious video game. Like Parrish, they become trapped and in order to return they have to beat the game challenges and embark on the adventure of a lifetime.

Meanwhile, Dunst, who was only 18 when she made the original movie with Williams in 1995, told Entertainment Tonight that she did not know there’s an upcoming “Jumanji” sequel. “I’m offended I haven’t been reached out to be in it!” she joked, adding she would have been game for a cameo.

“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” will premiere in theaters on Dec. 20. An official trailer should be out this summer but learn more about the film in the video below.
